Marking one of the biggest surprises of The Game Awards, Joker from Persona 5 is coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Fans are freaking out, but the trailer might have not made it perfectly clear how you will eventually unlock this character in your game of SSBU. Here’s how to get Joker from Persona 5 in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

There’s two phases to getting Joker into your game, the first you can do right now. Joker is a DLC character for SSBU, so what you need to do now is purchase that DLC. Yes, he will not be in the base game, and he will not be free. Instead he will be the first fully paid option for the game. You can wait and buy the DLC separately, or purchase the Fighter Pass right now.

DLC characters for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate come in packs, featuring the fighter, a stage, and music from their particular series. Joker will be the same, and if he’s the only DLC character that you want, you can get his pack for $5.99. Alternatively, he’s a part of the Fighter Pass which features all five currently planned DLC additions to SSBU. Either way, this is the first step: buy the character’s DLC pack.

After that there is a bit of an unknown. It’s possible that the character will just be tacked onto the game, added to your roster without any interaction on your part. This isn’t too likely though, given how creative adding new characters is for this series. More likely, you’ll want to follow our usual method for unlocking characters. This means you’ll want to load up Vs mode and play through a match. If all goes as planned, Joker will threaten you and a battle will ensue. Beat him and he’ll be right there for use in later matches. This is speculation right now though.

And that’s all we know right now about how to get Joker from Persona 5 in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
