How Does Wordle Work?

Wordle is a daily word game created by software engineer Josh Wardle, who wanted to make a game for his wife. He released the game free for everyone to try online, and the rest is history. The game blew up overnight, becoming a sensation that was eventually acquired by the New York Times.

Wordle tasks players with guessing a new five-letter word every day. You only have six attempts to guess the mystery word of the day before being locked out for good. The game does give you some hints though, so you’re not completely in the dark.

When you make a guess, any letters in the correct spots will turn green. Any letters that are correct but are in the wrong position will turn yellow. Any outright wrong letters will turn gray. Some people understandably need more help than that though, so they look up additional assistance online.

There’s no shame in looking up Wordle hints or solutions online (everyone has done it at least once). If you ever find yourself needing hints to save your long-running Wordle streak, be sure to check Attack of the Fanboy for all the best Wordle hints, tips, and solutions.
