Destiny 2 is still on track for a 2017 release according to Activision.  During their most recent earnings report, the publisher revealed vague details about what to expect from the highly anticipated sequel.

Activision executives Thomas Tippl and Eric Hirshberg talked Destiny 2 on the call:

Tippl revealed that Destiny 2 is being made “to thrill” the exisiting Destiny player base, but that they also want to “bring many new players into the fold.”  Tippl also included a hint about post-launch plans for the game, which sound very similar to the structure of the previous game, calling them “content seasons.”

Sounds like Bungie is putting a lot of focus on the story and cinematics for Destiny 2

While Tippl’s comments sound like they’ll be following a similar pattern to that of Destiny, we’ll have to wait and see whether that means will be seeing yearly expansions like we’ve seen of late, or if the game will see multiple expansion drops throughout the year, as we did at the onset release of Destiny.

CEO Eric Hirshberg added, that “development is going great,” for Destiny 2.  Hirshberg noted that the sequel will have “a lot for them to love,”  when talking about the existing playerbase for the original game.

Despite the original game’s patchwork story, Hirshberg also declared that Destiny 2 will feature a “great cinematic story.”  He said that story has been a cornerstone of the Destiny 2’s development and a “real focus” for Bungie.  Destiny 2 will feature a “great cast of memorable, relateable characters,” said Hirshberg. From the sounds of it, Bungie has taken fan feedback about the original game and gone to work in creating both gameplay and narrative structure that is compelling to all players.

Hirshberg added, there are some “nice ways to make the game more accessible to a casual player, without losing anything that our core players love,”  finally revealing that Destiny 2 will be ‘more accessible for someone who just wants a more casual first-person action experience.’

The development of Destiny 2 has been flying under the radar for quite some time.  Concrete details about what to expect from the game when it comes to gameplay, story, or other aspects have not been revealed at all up to this point.
