Former Vice President Kamala Harris recently shared her thoughts on changing who can vote in America. She thinks teenagers as young as 16 should be allowed to cast their ballots.
She talked about this idea during an interview on The Diary Of A CEO. Harris talked about young people and how they see the world today. She said that Generation Z, which includes people between 13 and 27 years old, has spent their whole lives dealing with climate change issues.
According to Fox News, Harris said she believes “we should reduce voting age to 16.” The she explained: “I’ll tell you why. So, Gen Z, they’re age about 13 through 27, they’ve only known the climate crisis. “If they’re in high school or college, especially in college, it is very likely that whatever they’ve chosen as their major for study may not result in an affordable wage.”
DeSantis has a different take on this proposal
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis quickly responded to what Harris said. He made his feelings clear in a message he posted on X. He did not agree with her idea at all.
DeSantis simply said “No” to the whole thing. He also said that being worried about climate change is not a good reason to let younger people vote. He seemed to think that feeling anxious about the environment should not be used as proof that 16-year-olds are ready to vote.
Some people have noticed something interesting about Harris’s views on age limits. She wants to let 16-year-olds vote, but she also thinks people should be older before they can buy guns. The former vice president has remained active in politics since losing the 2024 election, continuing to speak out on various issues.
Back in 2022, Harris wrote a post about gun laws that showed what she thinks. She said the Senate needed to act on gun violence. She wanted them to ban assault weapons and magazines that hold lots of bullets. She also said the age to buy guns should go up from 18 to 21. Plus, she wanted stronger background checks for people buying guns.
People have pointed out that these two ideas seem to go in opposite directions. Harris wants younger people to be able to vote but older people to be able to buy guns.
Some critics think this does not make sense. But people who support Harris might say that voting and owning guns are very different things with different levels of responsibility.
Talking about lowering the voting age is nothing new in America. Many people over the years have brought up this idea. They often talk about how young people care deeply about things like climate change and fairness in society.
But making this change would not be easy. Harris has hinted at future political ambitions, and changing the voting age would probably need a change to the Constitution, which is very hard to do.
