Activision has announced the initial sales figures for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.  Launching earlier this week, across all platforms and regions the game made $400 million dollars in the first 24 hours of availability, selling a whopping 6.5 million copies.

This marks the third straight year that the Call of Duty franchise has set launch records not just for video games, but for entertainment mediums in general.  Activision Publishing’s Eric Hirshberg had this to say about the recent launch.

“Call of Duty is more than a game.  It’s become a major part of the pop cultural landscape.  It is a game that core enthusiasts love, but that also consistently draws new people into the medium.  It is the most intense, adrenaline pumping entertainment experience anywhere.  I would like to thank our incredible teams at Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games for making a brilliant game.  But most of all, I would like to thank our millions of passionate fans worldwide.  We made this game for you.”

Generating $400 million, this launch eclipses last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops ($360 million) and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 ($310 million).
