Pokken Tournament is almost here and as we get closer to the release date next month, more information just keeps coming. The latest involves Nintendo’s latest cash cow, amiibo, and whether or not the still growing collection will be compatible with the game.
With Pokken Tournament’s first run copies coming with a special Shadow Mewtwo amiibo card, it was almost a foregone conclusion that the game would have some sort of amiibo support. The thought would have been at least for the Pokemon amiibo to work in some way, but evidently they are thinking much larger.
As revealed through the official Nintendo website listing for Pokken Tournament, the game will be compatible with all amiibo accessories, which seems to indicate both figures and cards.
According to this listing, the amiibo accessories will unlock in-game items in Pokken Tournament, though no details are given on just what kind of items. It would be really neat if certain amiibo unlocked special costumes for the Pokemon in the game, like in Super Mario Maker, but that seems a little too unrealistic.
Instead, I would assume that the more likely integration will be something like was seen in Hyrule Warriors, where only a few amiibo provided exclusive content, while the rest just gave you random items. It would be cool to at least see the Pikachu and Lucario amiibo providing something special to their Pokken Tournament counterparts, but we’ll just have to wait and see when Pokken Tournament releases on March 18 for Wii U.
