‘Netanyahu had everything to do with it’: Leaked audio claims Israel paid for Trump’s pardon of a drug lord serving 45 years in prison

This connects to a bigger geopolitical play.

Leaked audio recordings have exposed the alleged involvement of former US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a plot to pardon a notorious Honduran drug lord. The recordings were released by the investigative website Hondurasgate. They appear to show that Juan Orlando Hernández, the former Honduran President who was sentenced in 2024 for his role in a massive cocaine trafficking operation.

According to El País, the recordings claim Netanyahu allegedly provided financial support for Hernández’s pardon. However, Hernández also reveals in the audio that the pardon money did not come directly from Trump or Netanyahu, but rather from a group of rabbis and people who supported Israel. In one of the recordings, Hernández explicitly states that Netanyahu had “everything to do” with his release and the negotiations that made it possible.

The recordings have sparked widespread outrage, with many accusing Netanyahu of trying to exert influence over the US government to secure Hernández’s release. Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has also responded to the situation, warning that her government will not be destabilized by outside pressure.

The pardon scandal is straining relationships across Latin America and beyond

Sheinbaum has been a vocal critic of Trump’s policies and addressed the situation directly. “They can set up a smear campaign office against our government in Honduras, using resources from a friendly nation,” she said. “It won’t affect us, not at all.”

Trump’s relationship with Mexico and Colombia has already been under strain in recent months. His repeated threats to intervene in Mexico against organized crime and his decision to revoke the visa of Colombian President Gustavo Petro have added to the tension.

The leaked recordings have only added more pressure to these already troubled diplomatic ties. This comes at a time when Netanyahu’s relationship with Trump has also faced its own complications, including how Trump kept Netanyahu out of key regional decisions.

The controversy has also spread to Argentina, where President Javier Milei has been accused of providing financial support for Hernández’s pardon. Milei, who has been a close ally of Trump, has denied any wrongdoing. However, the allegations have raised serious questions about the extent of his involvement in the matter.

The situation has put Milei in an uncomfortable position, as it threatens to complicate Argentina’s standing in the wider region. Hernández was sentenced in 2024 for playing a major role in a large-scale cocaine trafficking operation. He had been serving a 45-year prison sentence before the pardon came into the picture.

His case became a significant point of discussion given his former position as the president of Honduras and his reported ties to powerful political figures across the Americas. The fact that a former head of state was convicted on such serious charges had already made the case widely followed internationally.

The pardon itself has raised serious legal and ethical questions about how such a decision was made and who was truly behind it. Many legal observers have pointed out that if foreign governments or private groups were involved in funding or influencing a US presidential pardon, it could have serious legal consequences. The full details of how the pardon was arranged are still not publicly known, and investigations are expected to continue.

The full extent of Netanyahu’s involvement in the pardon remains unclear, and no conclusive evidence has been presented to officially link him to the deal. Netanyahu has recently been navigating other sensitive diplomatic matters as well, such as Israel’s stance on the US-Iran ceasefire talks. As more details continue to come out, the situation is being watched closely by governments and observers across the region.
