Super Smash Bros Ultimate The Hero coming in July

Nintendo May Have Accidentally Confirmed that The Hero is Coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate This Month

At E3 last month, Nintendo revealed that the next DLC character coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be The Hero from Dragon Quest XI, with alternate skins portraying various protagonists from other Dragon Quest games. At the time, Nintendo simply said that The Hero would be coming to the game sometime this summer, but he may become playable sooner than later.

Nintendo recently posted a new video to YouTube called “Nintendo Switch – Fan-Favorites & Newest Releases – Summer.” In this short video, Nintendo showcased some of the games and updates set to come out this summer, including Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3. The interesting thing is that only four games were showcased in this video – aside from the two previously mentioned ones, they showed Fortnite and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – specifically, they showed Season 9 of Fortnite and The Hero in Smash Ultimate. Thus, despite the title of the video, this doesn’t seem to be a showcase of games coming to the Switch this summer so much as it’s showing games that are or will be available this month specifically. Fortnite Season 9 is currently playable, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 comes out on July 19, and Fire Emblem: Three Houses comes out on July 26. Even though the title of the video would have us believe that they are showcasing their summer games, the video is certainly emphasizing Nintendo’s July games specifically, omitting other big summer releases such as Astral Chain on August 30, Daemon X Machina on September 13, and Link’s Awakening on September 20 (summer ends this year on September 22).

But aside from the fact that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is being lumped in with only games available in or coming out in July, there’s another thing to consider. When this video was originally published, it was actually titled “Nintendo Switch – Fan-Favorites & Newest Releases – July,” until the “July” part was later changed to “Summer,” something that a bunch of Reddit users remember. So it seems likely that The Hero is in fact set to join the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster later this month, which also makes sense considering that that would mean introducing the character about three months after the inclusion of Joker into the game, who himself was introduced almost three months after Piranha Plant, the first DLC character.

So it seems possible that The Hero will be coming this month and that the title of the video was changed because Nintendo doesn’t necessarily want this information out yet. However, keep in mind that, since it hasn’t been officially confirmed by Nintendo, The Hero coming this month isn’t a certainty. In fact, it’s possible that the video having “July” in its title was a mistake to begin with and it was changed because The Hero is NOT actually coming this month. We’ll just have to wait and see.
