Marvel actor Jeremy Renner and filmmaker Yi Zhou seemed to have worked things out over the weekend, but Renner’s lawyer is now saying that’s not true at all. The two have been fighting over their work together on two documentaries called Stardust Future and Chronicles of Disney. Both of them have been sending legal letters to each other, with each person saying the other acted badly.
According to Unilad, the whole thing started because of what happened between them while they were working together. Both Renner and Zhou have said they had a romantic relationship when they first started on the project. Renner told reporters he only saw Zhou two times for the documentary work, but he did admit they had a “brief consensual encounter.” Zhou, however, says things happened very differently than what Renner is claiming.
Last weekend , Zhou told the media she and Renner had “reached a peaceful and mutually respectful resolution” and that they would keep working on their projects together. She said they “appreciate everyone who supported a positive outcome and embraced a forward-looking, collaborative path.” But then Renner’s lawyer came out and said this wasn’t true.
This resolution story fell apart pretty quickly
Marty Singer, who represents Renner, shot down what Zhou said about them reaching an agreement. “There was no deal reached with Yi Zhou to resolve my client Jeremy Renner’s substantial multi-million dollar claims against her,” he said. Singer also said he doesn’t understand why Zhou would say they made a deal when she was already told no agreement was made.
Singer brought up another problem too. “I have no knowledge why Yi Zhou would fabricate a story that a deal has been made with her since she was notified that there was no deal with her, including her use of Jeremy Renner in an animated movie when he only agreed to be in a documentary,” he said. In recent months, several Hollywood figures have had to address false claims circulating about them, making public denials increasingly common.
Zhou has made some serious accusations about what Renner did. She wrote on Instagram on November 3 that Renner reached out to her first in June by “sending personal and intimate photographs of himself.” She said he told her he was single and wanted a serious relationship, and she believed him. Zhou claims she then got more unwanted pictures from him on social media and WhatsApp.
The most serious part of Zhou’s story is what she says happened when she asked him to stop. She wrote that when she told him about his bad behavior and asked him to “respect me as a woman and as a filmmaker, he threatened to call immigration/ICE on me, an act that deeply shocked and frightened me.” Like other recent celebrity disputes, representatives for both parties have issued statements defending their clients.
Someone speaking for Renner told UNILAD before that Zhou’s accusations are “totally inaccurate and untrue.” Now that both sides are saying completely different things about whether they’ve settled their fight, it looks like this situation is going to keep going for a while.
