A woman who flies frequently recorded airport staff putting strange 50-pound yellow sacks onto her Delta Air Lines plane. TikTok user Hannah White was sitting by her window before takeoff when she saw workers placing large bright yellow bags onto the conveyor belt going into the aircraft. The bags had “Delta Air Lines” written on them.
According to Bro Bible, White posted the video asking people to explain what she was seeing. She wrote that the cargo looked like 50-pound sandbags, which didn’t make sense to her. Even though she flies often, she had never seen this before.
These yellow bags are called “ballast bags,” and they help keep the plane balanced. They are important for safety because they help maintain the aircraft’s center of gravity. Airlines use them mostly on smaller planes that don’t have enough passengers to spread the weight evenly.
Airlines need these bags to keep planes safely balanced
Without proper balancing, the plane’s center of gravity gets thrown off, which creates major safety problems. Ballast bags fix the uneven weight caused by passengers and their luggage. Workers load them into either the nose or tail of the plane to keep the aircraft balanced on both ends. This makes sure takeoff and landing go smoothly for everyone.
Planes are very sensitive to weight distribution. If all passengers move to the front during a flight, it actually changes the angle of the aircraft and needs to be corrected. Without ballast bags, pilots would have to ask passengers to switch seats to restore balance. Nobody wants to be forced out of their chosen seat, so these heavy bags solve that problem. Speaking of seating, pilots have also shared concerning truths about plane seat locations that passengers should know.
People noticed something unfair about this practice. Each yellow sack weighs about 50 pounds, and airlines load thousands of pounds of them onto planes regularly. Meanwhile, passengers get charged huge fees for slightly overweight bags.
People find it frustrating to pay penalties for a few extra pounds while watching airlines deliberately add massive amounts of extra weight. “They’d rather load the plane with 50lb sandbags than give people a 40lb luggage for free,” one person wrote. “And yet they complain about my 51 pound bag,” another person wrote.
Airport workers who load these bags also shared their thoughts. One worker said they hate loading the sandbags because it’s hard work. Another mentioned putting 3,200 pounds of sand on a plane last week. There’s clearly a lot more happening behind the scenes than just loading suitcases. Understanding where you sit on a plane can also impact your overall flight experience beyond just baggage concerns.
