The fictional video game from cult classic ‘Grandma’s Boy’ might finally become real after nearly 20 years, and fans can’t believe it

Return of a cult classic.

The 2006 comedy Grandma’s Boy is back in the spotlight, this time for a surprising reason: the movie’s fictional video game, Demonik, could actually be developed into a real, playable game. Grandma’s Boy has remained a beloved cult comedy from the 2000s, even though it received poor reviews from critics when it was first released.

The film stars Allen Covert as Alex, a video game tester forced to move in with his grandmother and her quirky roommates after failing to pay his rent. Covert co-wrote the movie with Barry Wernick and Nick Swardson, while Nicholaus Goossen directed the project.

The film also boasted a strong supporting cast, including Linda Cardellini, Doris Roberts, Peter Dante, Shirley Jones, Shirley Knight, Joel David Moore, Kevin Nealon, and Swardson himself. According to The Daily Dot, fans of the movie are excited about the possibility of Demonik becoming a real game, bridging the gap between the film’s fictional world and the real-life gaming community.

The game almost happened once before

In the movie, Alex creates Demonik while working late at night in secret. A coworker tries to steal the game and claim it as his own work. But Alex proves the game is his, and it becomes successful.

The game nearly became real years ago, but the release was stopped. Even a gameplay trailer was shown at E3 2005. Recently, Covert talked to fans at an event and said the game might finally get made. Fans of nostalgic content have been celebrating similar moments, like when a former Nickelodeon star was spotted in public recently.

Covert explained he reached out to gaming companies when making the movie. He wanted real game footage that looked professional. A company called Majesco had a game called Demonik in development, so they used footage from it in the film.

However, Majesco went out of business soon after, so the game never came out. Covert said someone who worked on the game recently contacted him and told him they may have “found the game.” Since next year marks the 20th anniversary of Grandma’s Boy, Covert hopes the game can finally be released.

Fans are excited about the news. Many left comments on social media saying they would buy the game. Some joked that Demonik might come out before the long-delayed Grand Theft Auto 6. Others suggested packaging the game with a special anniversary edition of the movie, similar to how HBO Max recently added features fans had requested for years.
