Former British Ambassador Peter Mandelson has been released from police custody just hours after his arrest on misconduct charges linked to his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, as reported by The Hill. A Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed that a 72-year-old man, arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, was released on bail as investigations continue.
Mandelson was taken into custody in the London borough of Camden and transported to a police station. His arrest followed the execution of two search warrants at properties located in Wiltshire and Camden, according to statements from authorities.
This isn’t the first time Mandelson’s ties to Epstein have caused a stir. He was actually fired from his role as the U.K. ambassador last September. That happened after documents released by the Justice Department revealed he maintained a supportive relationship with the disgraced financier, even after Epstein was jailed for sexual abuse.
The British politician has been under investigation for allegations that he shared sensitive government information with Epstein while he was serving in the House of Lords
While Mandelson has denied any criminal wrongdoing concerning Epstein, he did resign from the Labour Party and his seat in Parliament back in early February. He stated he wanted to avoid causing “further embarrassment” after details emerged suggesting he had received payments from the financier two decades ago.
His recent arrest came just days after Representative Robert Garcia, a Democrat from California, shared that Mandelson’s lawyers informed them he was “unable to appear” for a requested interview with House Oversight Democrats. Lawmakers had been keen to speak with Mandelson as part of an ongoing probe into Epstein’s extensive crimes. They found “numerous pieces of evidence” in the files that clearly showed his connections to Epstein, including a handwritten note in Epstein’s 50th birthday book and several financial transactions.
The House Oversight Democrats reacted to Mandelson’s arrest in a post on X, noting, “This is after files revealed Jeffrey Epstein sent $75,000 to accounts connected to him.” They didn’t pull any punches, adding, “As we have said before: no one is above the law. We will make sure accountability and justice come to everyone in Epstein’s world.”
It’s also worth noting that Mandelson’s arrest occurred just days after Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was also arrested. He faces suspicion of misconduct while in public office, accused of sharing confidential information with Epstein during his time as a trade envoy. It seems like the net is really widening for those connected to Epstein, and we’re seeing more and more of these high-profile individuals being scrutinized.
