Is Baldur’s Gate 3 Coming to Xbox?

Baldur’s Gate 3 has been in early access on PC for nearly three years, allowing players to jump into the game’s first act before its official release. While this has helped Baldur’s Gate 3 accumulate massive pre-release hype, its PC exclusivity has left many non-PC gamers wondering if the game is coming to home consoles. Xbox players are among the many groups of gamers who want to know if Baldur’s Gate 3 is coming to consoles. Here’s everything we know about Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox.

Is Baldur’s Gate 3 Coming to Xbox?

If you’re an Xbox user who has spent the last three years wondering if you’ll have a chance to play Baldur’s Gate 3 on your console, I have good news. A port of Baldur’s Gate 3 is coming to the Xbox Series X and Series S. This announcement probably comes as a relief for Xbox fans who have been following the press release cycle surrounding Baludr’s Gate 3, as an early interview with the game’s executive producer David Walgrave on Eurogamer made it sound like Baldur’s Gate 3 would never be coming to consoles.

We are now focusing on PC and Stadia but that’s it.

Unfortunately, while Xbox ports of Baldur’s Gate 3 have been confirmed, Xbox players might be unable to get their hands on them for some time. In a recent interview with IGN, Larion Studios’ CEO, Swen Vincke, explained that the Xbox Series S’s technical limitations have made implementing Baldur’s Gate 3’s split-screen co-op into the port more complicated than the team expected. In Vincke’s own words, these issues have forced the game’s development team to make unspecified “compromises” to complete the port.

There’s constraints we have to overcome, so we just work on them. Some take more time.

Despite these technical issues, Vincke has confirmed that Larion Studios is committed to releasing Xbox ports of Baldur’s Gate 3. Unfortunately, due to an agreement that Larion Studios made with Microsoft that requires both Xbox ports of Baldur’s Gate 3 to release simultaneously, the ports cannot be released until the Xbox Series S port can be optimized for multiplayer. This means that Xbox players won’t be able to play Baldur’s Gate until 2024.
