Genshin Impact Hu Tao Character Guide

Genshin Impact Hu Tao Character and Build Guide

Recommended Videos

Genshin Impact has finally added Hu Tao to the game after much rumor and speculation. She makes her debut as the third “mystery” banner in Version 1.3. This 5-star pyro and polearm-wielding young lady runs the day-to-day operations for the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor in Liyue, and she wouldn’t mind giving the zombie Qiqi her last rites.

Update March 3rd: Now that Hu Tao is live and I have her in hand I can confirm all the information below is accurate, which was originally sourced from Honey Hunter World in the closed beta.

I’ve got a full set of build suggestions below Hu Tao’s constellations. It’s looking like she’ll need Pyro Damage and – dare I say it – HP to maximize her damage. Crit Rate and Crit Damage will follow after those two.

Genshin Impact Hu Tao Character Breakdown

Below will be listed Hu Tao’s full set of attacks and abilities, her passive talents, constellations, and finally all of her ascension and talent material requirements. I’ll add a build portion with suggested artifacts and weapons to this guide once she’s closer to going live. You can find guides for other characters by following the link here to our complete Genshin Impact character list.

Hu Tao Attacks and Abilities

  • Melee: Secret Spear of Wangsheng
    • Normal Attack: Perform up to 6 consecutive spear strikes.
    • Charged Attack: Consumes a certain amount of Stamina to lunge forward, dealing damage to opponents along the way.
    • Plunging Attack: Plunges from mid-air to strike the ground below, damaging opponents along the path and dealing AoE Damage upon impact.
  • Elemental Skill: Guide to Afterlife
    • Hu Tao consumes a set portion of her HP to knock surrounding enemies back, entering the Paramita Papilio state.
      • Increases Hu Tao’s attack based on her max HP at the time of entering this state. Attack bonus gained this way cannot exceed 400% of Hu Tao’s base attack.
      • Converts attack damage to Pyro damage, which cannot be overridden by any other elemental infusion.
      • Charged attacks apply Blood Blossom effect to the enemies hit.
      • Increases Hu Tao’s resistance to interruption.
    • Blood Blossom
      • Enemies affected by Blood Blossom will receive Pyro damage every 4-seconds. This damage is considered Elemental Skill damage.
      • Each enemy can be affected by only one Blood Blossom effect at a time, and its duration may only be refreshed by Hu Tao herself.
      • Paramita Papilio ends when its duration is over, or Hu Tao has left the battlefield or fallen.
  • Elemental Burst: Spirit Soother
    • Commands blazing spirits to attack, dealing Pyro damage in a large AoE.
    • Upon striking the enemy, regenerates a percentage of Hu Tao’s max HP. This effect can be triggered up to 5 times, based on the number of enemies hit.
    • If Hu Tao’s HP is below or equal to 50% when the enemy is hit, both the damage and the HP regeneration are increased.

Hu Tao Passive Talents

  • Flutter By
    • When Paramita Papilio state activated by Guide to Afterlife is over, all allies in the party (excluding Hu Tao herself) will have their crit-rate increased by 12% for 8s.
  • Sanguine Rouge
    • When Hu Tao’s HP is equal to or less than 50%, her Pyro damage bonus is increased by 33%.
  • The More the Merrier
    • When Hu Tao cooks a dish perfectly, she has a 18% chance to receive an additional “Suspicious” dish of the same type.

Hu Tao Constellations

  • Crimson Bouquet
    • While in Paramita Papilio state activated by Guide to Afterlife, Hu Tao’s Charge Attacks do not consume stamina.
  • Ominous Rainfall
    • Increases the Blood Blossom damage by the amount equal to 10% of Hu Tao’s max HP at the time the effect is applied. Additionally, Spirit Soother will also apply the Blood Blossom effect.
  • Lingering Carmine
    • Increases the level of Guide to the Afterlife by 3. Maximum upgrade level is 15.
  • Garden of Eternal Rest
    • Upon defeating an enemy affected by Blood Blossom that Hu Tao applies herself, all nearby allies in the party (excluding Hu Tao herself) will have their crit-rate increased by 12% for 15s.
  • Floral Incense
    • Increases the level of Spirit Soother by 3. Maximum upgrade level is 15.
  • Butterfly’s Embrace
    • Triggers when Hu Tao’s HP drops below 25%, or when she suffers a lethal strike:
      • Hu Tao will not fall as a result of the damage sustained. Instead, all of her Elemental and Physical resistance is increased by 200%, and her crit-rate is increased by 100% for 10s, and her resistance to interruption is greatly increased.
      • This effect triggers automatically when Hu Tao has 1 HP left.
      • Can only occur once every 60s.

Hu Tao Build Suggestions in Genshin Impact.

Hu Tao is all about damage, and she’ll sacrifice some of her own life to increase it. Hu Tao also imbues her weapon with Pyro whenever you use her skill, meaning you’ll want artifacts that boost Pyro damage over pure attack.

Weapons that work best for Hu Tao in Genshin Impact are the Staff of Homa (a spear tailor-crafted to her), the Primordial Jade Winged-Spear, and the Prototype Starglitter (though the Favonius Lance isn’t terrible if you have someone in your team capable of generating elemental particles). The first two are 5-stars, and the latter are 4-stars (the prototype is craftable if you can get the drop, and the Favonius is earned via gacha).

  • Staff of Homa: HP increased by 20% (up to 40%). Additionally, provides an Attack Bonus based on 0.8% (up to 1.6%) of the wielder’s Max HP. When the wielder’s HP is less than 50%, this Attack bonus is increased by an additional 1% (up to 1.8%) of Max HP. Secondary: Crit Rate.
  • Primordial Jade Winged-Spear: On hit, increases Attack by 3.2% (up to 6%) for 6s. Max 7 stacks. This effect can only occur once every 0.3s. While in possession of the maximum possible stacks, damage dealt is increased by 12% (up to 24%). Secondary: Crit Rate.
  • After using an Elemental Skill, increases Normal and Charged Attack DMG by 8% (up to 16%) for 12s. Max 2 stacks. Secondary: Energy Recharge.
  • Favonius Lance: Crit hits have a 60% (up to 100%) chance to generate a small amount of Elemental Particles, which will regenerate 6 Energy for the character. Can only occur once every 12s (down to 6s). Secondary: Energy Recharge.

Since Hu Tao’s Elemental Skill increases her damage based on her Max HP and converts it to Pyro you will want an artifact set that maximizes those traits. The two best sets then are the Crimson Witch of Flames and Lavawalker sets (though Lavawalker’s 4-piece is better), though you can make due with the Gladiator’s Finale set while you farm the first one.

Aim for either the full Lavawalker set, or 2/2 of Crimson Witch and Gladiator’s Finale. Stat priorities for Hu Tao in Genshin Impact are Health, Pyro Damage %, Crit Rate/Hit, and Crit Damage.

  • Crimson Witch of the Flames (Hidden Palace of Zhou Formula)
    • (2) Pyro Damage Bonus +15%
    • (4) Increases Overloaded and Burning DMG by 40%. Increases Vaporize and Melt DMG by 15%. Using an Elemental Skill increases the 2-Piece Set Bonus by 50% of its starting value for 10s. Max 3 stacks.
  • Lavawalker (Hidden Palace of Zhou Formula)
    • (2) Pyro Resistance increased by 40%.
    • (4) Increased damge against enemies affected by Pyro by 35%.
  • Gladiator’s Finale (Normal and Weekly Bosses in World Tier 3+)
    • (2) Attack +18%.
    • (4) If the wielder of this artifact set uses a Sword, Claymore or Polearm, increases their Normal Attack damage by 35%.
