Pokémon GO is basically the biggest AR (Augmented Reality) game in the world, and yet many ignore some of its best AR features. I’m one of them, frantically turning AR mode off whenever my settings get reset for any reason. But players on newer iPhones have enjoyed this feature quite a bit thanks to the quite impressive AR+ mode that has been an Apple exclusive for some time. That time is over though and now many on Android can enjoy AR+ with Pokémon GO.
“Android users can now experience Pokémon GO in a whole new way! Get up close and personal with Pokémon originally discovered in the Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn regions with Pokémon GO AR+!” Niantic announced today.
“Pokémon GO AR+ requires ARCore to be downloaded from the Google Play Store, so you should check first to see if your device is supported. Once downloaded, Pokémon GO AR+ offers the opportunity to have a unique AR experience when encountering Pokémon. As you walk up to a Pokémon, it scales in size and will notice your movement! Get up close before you throw your Poké Ball to make the Pokémon easier to catch, and even earn an Expert Handler bonus!! Or you can tap the camera icon to take a photo of your subject in the environment around you.”
AR+ is a huge step up from the basic AR features that are built into the hugely popular mobile game. Not only is it really cool to see, but as the announcement says, it can actually make catching creatures easier. If you have a supported Android phone be sure to grab ARCore and try it out.
