With Treyarch on deck for this year’s installment of Call of Duty, it’s wasn’t a far stretch to think that they’d be continuing with the Black Ops series.  Though this week we’ve now heard two different sources claim that the next Call of Duty game would be Black Ops 4.

Earlier this week a user on Twitter leaked information regarding the game, saying that it would be another “boots on the ground” title, and now sources of Eurogamer have corroborated these claims.  Regardless, it’s sounding more and more likely that the next Call of Duty game will be Black Ops 4 and that Treyarch will pick up where Sledgehammer left off in terms of gameplay as fans reacted positively to the return of grounded combat in Call of Duty WW2.

What we don’t know are the nitty gritty details at this point.  Treyarch has covered a wide timeline in the Black Ops series thus far, trying many different settings and at times jumping back and forth between them. The original rumor claimed that the game would be set in “modern times,” while Eurogamer only confirmed that it would indeed be Black Ops 4 that we’d be seeing this year.

To further complicate things, James C Burns, the voice actor who plays Sgt. Frank Woods in Black Ops & Black Ops 2 had this to say on Twitter:  “Its a bit early for the “official” leak faucet to start dripping…. But..in the past…the pipes have been compromised… AND smart folks do piece together the available intel in surprising ways… might wan to go ” X-files” on this.”

It won’t be long before we hear more about the next Call of Duty game.  Activision’s Call of Duty reveals are on a clockwork schedule.  This Spring will likely bring us our first official details for the game.

If it does turn out to be Black Ops 4 with the series seeing boots on the ground gameplay, many will likely be pleased.  Call of Duty: Black Ops as a series within the franchise has had some of the best story telling in the single player campaigns and many look upon Black Ops fondly as this is Call of Duty at the height of its popularity.  Treyarch also introduced Zombies mode to the series and it’s highly likely that this trend continues with their next effort.

An official reveal for the game is likely two months away.
