It looks like Agent Locke might actually be the main character for Halo 5: Guardians and not Master Chief according to the game’s story.
A reddit user managed to read an interview with Agent Locke’s actor Mike Locke published in X-One magazine. Colter stars as Agent Locke in the upcoming Halo: Nightfall series as well as in Halo 5: Guardians.
When asked about this character in Halo 5: Guardians, Colter says that gamers will be playing the game “with me as the primary character“. He said Agent Locke has some cool abilities and weapons for gamers to play with.
Colter also hinted about the story of Halo 5: Guardians. He hinted a large part of the game’s campaign will be Agent Locker trying to find Master Chief. He says both guys have an interesting relationship as Locke doesn’t know if Master Chief is a “friend or foe“.
He also hinted in Halo 5: Guardians, players don’t know if Master Chief is dead or alive in the game. The game doesn’t tell you why Agent Locke wants to find Master Chief until much later in the game. He hints there is a big plot twist that happens in the game.
