After years of waiting, The Last Guardian is finally coming out on PS4 early next month. The game is kind of a niche product, coming off the critically acclaimed Shadow of the Colossus and Ico. However, it seems that the years of hype surrounding the title has pushed Sony to market the game in a big way. This expands greatly today with the release of The Last Guardian trailer into US movie theaters.
This sort of marketing blitz is usually reserved for big budget, AAA games such as Call of Duty and Titanfall 2. Other games that have been shown off in theaters follow closely to that action, shooter formula, like Gears of War 4 and others. The Last Guardian doesn’t fit the mold, but maybe that will play to its favor.
The Last Guardian looks to tell a very emotional story that could draw in a lot of players, if they’re aware of the game. This seemed to be a big difference between Ico, which was critically acclaimed but not as successful commercially, and its spiritual followup, Shadow of the Colossus. The latter sold much better, even if it didn’t hit the lofty levels of the aforementioned shooter franchises.
Maybe with the right marketing The Last Guardian can deliver better sales, along with the critical praise that players are hoping the game will achieve.
As far as where you might see the trailer, the tweet didn’t specifically state that the trailer would be shown with the new Harry Potter spin-off, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, but it was kind of made clear enough. We also don’t know exactly which of The Last Guardian’s multiple trailers will be shown, but it did say “the latest”, so likely the one below.
The Last Guardian hits PS4 on December 6th.
