New Predictions for an Early Price Cut for PS Vita

by William Schwartz

Financial publication, Forbes Magazine, is already calling for a price cut for the PlayStation Vita after a lackluster second week of sales.  Pointing to the elephant in the room, one contributor to the financial publication believes that history will repeat itself, and Nintendo’s unprecedented price drop earlier this year, will be matched by Sony sooner rather than later if they want the Vita to succeed.  They claim that Sony will need to act “Very Soon”  and that the North American launch will likely be “a true debacle”  and cite several reasons for this.

For one, as what most of the gaming community have been claiming all along, the pricing “seems delusional”  when compared to devices like the Kindle Fire which saw great commercial success and is priced significantly lower than a Vita.  That sweet $200 price level is one that North American consumers have proven to be comfortable with if the Kindle Fire’s success over the holidays is any indication.

There’s no doubt that the portable gaming market is much more popular in Japan than it is anywhere else in the world, and if Sony struggles there, it could be a sign of even worse troubles ahead for the handheld when it launches worldwide in 2012.  While its all speculation until we see the actual response from consumers for the device here in the U.S. , it looks like the industry shift to tablets that analysts have been pointing to all along may mark its first casualty with the PS Vita, as Forbes points out, “The rot sets in first at the periphery”.
