The monthly NPD releases that reveal sales rankings for the previous month were recently pushed to later in the month, along with the inclusion of digital sales in the numbers. We did learn a couple weeks ago that the Xbox One beat out the PS4 for the month of July, but now it has been revealed that there was actually a game system that topped the Xbox One as well.

As revealed by VentureBeat, July 2016 saw a 30% drop in hardware sales compared to the same month in 2015, down to $141.3 million from $202.1 million.

While this was the case with overall game systems, the Nintendo 3DS went against this trend and actually did quite well to take the top spot for the month of July.

Due to an average price drop of the Nintendo 2DS by 33%, the overall sales of the system were up to 78,000 units, while the 3DS itself was up 18% in sales as well. With these combined under the 3DS umbrella that includes the regular 3DS, 2DS, New Nintendo 3DS, and any other versions like the XL, they took the crown in July.

Like was previously announced, the Xbox One was the top selling current-gen console for July as well, taking the top spot from the PS4 for the first time in a number of months.
