Family bails from their newly bought home due to massive snake problem, now their former neighbor confessed the origin story of the infestation

The mystery behind a major snake infestation that forced a family to vacate their home has finally been solved, thanks to a confession from a former neighbor. In a viral TikTok video that has racked up more than 16 million views and was covered by BroBible, creator Nicole Parish, who goes by the handle @soundoftheforest, explained exactly how a childhood hobby spiraled into a residential nightmare for the people living next door.

The origin story dates back to when Parish and her brother were young children with a fascination for garter snakes. They spent their days in a nearby field, collecting every snake they could get their hands on. Instead of leaving these reptiles in their natural habitat, the siblings brought them home and released them into their own yard.

They even made a point to feed the snakes, which effectively encouraged the local population to stick around and multiply. Parish noted that they were young and simply loved the animals, but the situation eventually hit a breaking point.

This serves as a reminder of how quickly nature can reclaim a living space when given a little push

Parish said it started innocently enough. She and her brother, as kids, loved garter snakes. So they went to a nearby field almost every single day. There, they collected as many as they could find, and released them into their yard and fed them to keep them around. “We absolutely loved them,” she says. “But it got to a point that there were just so many snakes in our yard that there wasn’t room for them all.”

When the yard became too crowded, the snakes naturally looked for new territory. A bank-owned property sat abandoned next door for years, and the snakes quickly migrated to the empty structure. Because the house was vacant, the growing colony went completely unnoticed by the neighborhood. This quiet migration continued until a new family finally moved into the property. The reality of the infestation became impossible to ignore once the new residents started finding snakes everywhere, from their yard to the interior of the house and even inside the walls.

The new neighbors eventually approached Parish’s family to ask how they dealt with the snakes, assuming it was a local issue they were surely familiar with. Parish’s mother was caught completely off guard. “It wasn’t long until we got a knock on our door,” she says. The new neighbors wanted to know how Parish’s family dealt with the snakes which they said were everywhere from the yard to the house to the walls. Her mom had no idea any of this was happening. “My mom was like, ‘What?’” she says.

While the mother expressed total confusion, the children stood by in silence. They never revealed that they had spent years essentially stocking the neighborhood with a massive population of garter snakes. Their mother believed they were just out playing and gathering maybe a few snakes here and there, never suspecting the scale of their wildlife management project.

Unfortunately for the new neighbors, the infestation proved to be too much to handle, and they ultimately moved out of the home. Parish, now reflecting on the event, took the opportunity to apologize in the caption of her video, stating, “If those neighbors see this video, I’m so sorry.”

It is easy to see why the neighbors were so overwhelmed, even if garter snakes are generally considered harmless. In fact, they are among the most benign snakes in the world. They do technically produce a mild neurotoxic venom, but the amount is so small it can’t harm a human. They are shy creatures that prefer to avoid humans and pets, and they are actually quite useful in a garden because they eat pests like slugs, snails, and small rodents. However, the experience of having them inside your walls is a different story entirely.

Beyond the shock factor of seeing snakes in the house, these animals can create a very unpleasant living environment. While a few garter snakes in a yard can be beneficial, a large group is a different story. Because they hibernate communally, a colony can form quickly, and their combined smell alone can make a residence unlivable. Experts describe garter snakes as potentially among the smelliest snakes. They also have the ability to bite if handled, and they release a foul odor from their anal gland as a defense mechanism.

The internet had plenty to say about the revelation, with many viewers finding the story both hilarious and horrifying. Some commenters joked about how the parents should have reacted, while others were simply fascinated by the unintended consequences of the siblings’ childhood activities.

One top comment read, “I don’t think my parents appreciate me as a child as much as they should.” Another viewer wrote, “You’re grounded. On behalf of moms everywhere you guys are grounded.”
