An Orange County jury has sentenced Adrian Echevarria to life in prison for the murder of Bami Elizabeth Carmane. The verdict was delivered following a quick trial that resulted in a unanimous decision from the jurors.
As reported by Law & Crime, the incident took place on August 21, 2025, at a residence on Foxglove Drive in Vidor. Deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene after receiving a report about an unresponsive woman. Upon their investigation, they determined that Carmane, who was 61 years old, did not die of natural causes. Echevarria, 49, was identified as a person of interest shortly after the discovery and was later arrested and indicted for the crime.
The connection between the two individuals began while Echevarria was reportedly still serving time in federal prison. Prosecutors revealed that he used a contraband cellphone to communicate with Carmane through Facebook.
She offered him a place to stay
They had reportedly met on an online dating app during his incarceration. After Echevarria was released from prison, Carmane offered him a place to stay on her business property. This gesture was intended to provide him with a fresh start, but it ended in violence just one day later.
The victim’s family described Carmane as a person whose kindness and openness were defining traits. They noted that she was a free spirit who enjoyed traveling, spending time with her family, and caring for animals. Her son has spent time going through her personal items and noted that he finds her to be more multifaceted and interesting as he learns more about her life.
A prosecutor shared similar sentiments during the trial, stating, “This trial is in no way any part of the definition of who Bami Carmane was,” and added, “[She] was a free spirit, someone who loved to travel, someone who loved to have fun with her family and her friends. She was so important in so many people’s lives.”
The legal proceedings moved forward with significant speed. After the jury found the defendant guilty of murder, they moved directly into the sentencing phase. It reportedly took the jurors only 15 minutes to decide on a life sentence. The jurors demonstrated their consensus by standing together each time they announced their verdicts throughout the trial.
Following the conclusion of the case, prosecutor Krispen Walker Winfree expressed satisfaction with the outcome. “He had every bit of it coming to him,” Winfree told KFDM. “The jurors gave it right to him.” The victim’s son also spoke about the weight of the situation, highlighting the missed opportunity for the defendant to change his path.
“He was in a position where he could have turned his life around from a really dark place and had the best help in the world doing that,” the son told the outlet. “How you could fumble something like that, the opportunity to make such a good life for yourself and then to take someone away from everyone else’s lives is beyond me.”
