FFXIV – How to Unlock Red Mage

Recommended Videos

Final Fantasy XIV’s Red Mage is one of the most versatile jobs in the game. As one of the few hybrid classes to make an appearance, not only can Red Mage deal massive amounts of magic damage but they can also provide additional heals, battle raises, and even a damage boost to all party members. With the class getting even more oomph in the upcoming Endwalker release, it’s a great time to unlock and level this master of both white and black magic. Here’s everything we know on how to unlock Red Mage in FFXIV.

How to Unlock Red Mage in FFXIV

To unlock Red Mage in FFXIV, you’ll need to clear the quest “Taking the Red” that starts in Ul’dah – Steps Of Thal (x:14.2, y:11.8). Once completed, you’ll gain the Red Mage soul crystal as well as its starting weapon and armor. There are a few more requirements for this quest to even appear though – see below for details!

Taking the Red Quest Requirements

While the quest is fairly straightforward to do once you get it, the requirements are slightly vaguer. To get the quest to appear you must:

  • Own the Stormblood expansion (if you are currently on the free trial as of September 2021, you will not be able to get this job).
  • Reach Level 50 on any disciple of War or Magic.
  • Have access to Ul’Dah (if you started in another city, this shouldn’t be a big issue as long as you continued through the main story to reach level 50. If you power leveled though, you’ll need to unlock this area to start the job quest).

And that’s it! Once you have the job unlocked, be sure to complete the follow-up quest The Crimson Duelist for a quick experience boost and slightly more understanding of your new job.
