Street Fighter 6 has a ton of new features recently shown off in the announcement trailer from the most recent State of Play, but the next installment in Capcom’s legendary fighting series makes an appreciated change to one of its star heroines. Chun-Li has a new voice actress in Street Fighter 6, something that a subsection of Street Fighter fans has been requesting for quite some time.
In all recent Street Fighter content, including Street Fighter IV, Street Figher V, and Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, Chun-Li has been voiced by renowned voice actress Laura Bailey. That name should sound very familiar to you if you’ve played at least one video game in your life, as Bailey is one of the most prolific talents in the industry, lending her vocal talents to characters like Abby from The Last of Us Part II, Mary Jane Watson in Marvel’s Spider-Man, Polina Petrova in Call of Duty: Vanguard, and more.
She’s also a main cast member of the Dungeons & Dragons show Critical Role, which just began its third campaign late last year and has an animated Amazon Prime series recounting the events of its first campaign.
While Bailey is a remarkably talented actress, many Street Fighter fans have wanted an Asian voice actress to play Chun-Li. Now, they’ve finally gotten their wish, as Chun-Li is voiced by Jennie Kwan in Street Fighter 6 according to the game’s official website. There’s not much other information about the fighter on her page yet as the game has only just been shown off for the first time, but her voice actress is listed plain as day.
While not quite as prolific as Laura Bailey, Chun-Li’s new voice actress is just as talented. Jennie Kwan’s most notable roles include Suki from Avatar: The Last Airbender and, more recently, Sayaka Nishizono from Lost Judgment. She has also provided additional voices for Demon Slayer and Red Dead Redemption 2, among other things, so she’s absolutely capable of portraying Chun-Li. It may be a minor change for the classic character, but it’s a much appreciated one to say the least.
Street Fighter 6 was recently shown off at the June State of Play presentation with an all-new trailer and an all-new logo as well. The game will feature a new adventure mode that appears to be open world, and it’s built on the RE Engine – the same engine that gave life to Resident Evil Village and Devil May Cry 5. Chun-Li was among the first of the fighters revealed for the Street Fighter 6 roster, joined by Ryu, Luke, and newcomer Jamie.
The June State of Play also showcased several other highly-anticipated titles with a strong focus on flagship games for the upcoming PlayStation VR 2 headset. Capcom had a particularly strong presence, with Resident Evil 4 Remake was finally confirmed with a March 2023 release date, and Resident Evil Village is getting full PSVR2 support just like its predecessor. The publisher has been on a hot streak with its latest releases, and with games like Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak on the horizon, that doesn’t appear to be stopping anytime soon.
Street Fighter 6Â will be released in 2023 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
