How to Learn Egg Moves in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet contain many new and altered mechanics, all of which are likely to assist some players and confuse others. One particular mechanic that has changed is breeding, becoming a bit more streamlined and accessible while still being somewhat odd to predict. Likewise, egg moves have been slightly affected by this change as well. They haven’t been removed from the games — in fact, some might say they’re even easier to find. It’s possible to learn egg moves in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet using more than one method.

Every Way Players Can Learn Egg Moves in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

As usual, it’s possible to learn egg moves through breeding. When a compatible move is passed down, the resulting Pokémon will have the move as soon as they hatch. However, it’s possible to pass these moves onto full-grown Pokémon through use of a Mirror Herb. Place the herb onto the Pokémon you want to teach the move to and go into a picnic with it and the other Pokémon that already knows the move. After some time, the Pokémon with Mirror Herb will have learned the move as well! This move will end up as a permanent part of their learned attacks, so you can remember it even if you delete it later.

You can get your hands on a Mirror Herb at Deliberd Presents in Cascarrafa. This town found at the western part of the map will sell Mirror Herbs at 30,000 Pokémon Dollars each. Additionally, these moves seem to be able to be passed on regardless of egg group. In other words, you’ll be able to teach egg moves to Pokémon that can only be male, as well as Pokémon without a known gender. More information on this will likely become clear when Pokémon HOME support launches in the future. In the meantime, experiment with different Pokémon combinations and use the picnic mechanic often. You might end up with a powerful move that you’d never normally expect your teammate to learn!
