fuecoco, the newest starter in pokemon violet and scarlet

All Fuecoco Evolutions and How to Get Them in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

I remember the first time I picked up Pokemon Scarlet and looked at the three starters. While some people were obsessed with the grass cat or the pompadour duck, I knew right away that Fuecoco was the one for me. This little fire crocodile is more than just a cute face with a big appetite: it eventually turns into one of the most reliable defensive anchors in the entire game. If you want to make the most of this evolutionary line, I have put together this guide to show you exactly how to evolve it and how to build a version that can handle the toughest competitive regulations.

How to evolve Fuecoco into Crocalor and Skeledirge

The good news is that you do not need any special stones or weird trading rituals to evolve Fuecoco. It follows the standard leveling path that we have seen for most fire starters over the years. I found that the best way to hit these levels quickly is to participate in Tera Raids to farm EXP Candies or simply keep it at the front of your party while you take down all team star teams and weaknesses across the Paldea region.

  • Fuecoco evolves into Crocalor at Level 16.
  • Crocalor evolves into Skeledirge at Level 36.

Once you reach that final stage, your crocodile gains the Ghost type. This is a massive defensive upgrade because it grants you total immunity to Normal and Fighting type moves. I have used this to my advantage many times by switching Skeledirge in when I know an opponent is about to use a move like Close Combat or Extreme Speed.

The secret power of Torch Song and the Unaware ability

If you want your Skeledirge to be truly terrifying, you need to understand its signature move: Torch Song. This move has a base power of 80, but the real magic is that it boosts your Special Attack by one stage every single time you use it. It is essentially a damaging version of Nasty Plot.

I also highly recommend using an Ability Patch to unlock its Hidden Ability: Unaware. In my experience, this is the single best ability for a defensive Pokemon in the current meta. Here is why:

  • Unaware ignores the stat changes of your opponent. If an enemy uses Swords Dance or Nasty Plot to triple their power, Skeledirge simply ignores those boosts when taking damage.
  • It also ignores defensive boosts. If your opponent tries to spam Iron Defense, your Torch Song will still hit them as if they had zero boosts.
  • Be careful with negative stats: Unaware also ignores your opponent’s stat drops. If they use Draco Meteor and lower their own Special Attack, you will still take full damage from the next hit because your ability ignores their negative changes too.

Where to catch wild Fuecoco in the Indigo Disk DLC

Many players think you can only get Fuecoco as a starter, but I have found a few ways to get more for your team. If you want to hunt for a version with specific stats, you have two main options.

  • Blueberry Academy: You can catch wild Fuecoco in the Savanna Biome of the Terarium. However, you must first contribute 3,000 Blueberry Points (BP) to the League Club Room to boost the biodiversity of that area.
  • Fixed Tera Spawns: I found a fixed Tera Fuecoco with a Steel Tera Type in South Province Area One. It is level 30 and hides near the riverbank on the way to Zapapico. The Steel typing is incredible for covering its natural weaknesses to Rock and Dragon types.
  • Breeding: If you have a Ditto and know how Pokemon breeding works in Scarlet and Violet, you can get your hands on as many Fuecoco eggs as you want.

The exact EV build I use for competitive battles

When I am preparing for Regulation I or any high level tournament, I do not just dump points into random stats. Skeledirge is slow, but it has incredible physical bulk. I have found that a specific investment in speed is the secret to winning close matches.

  • The 44 Speed Trick: If you invest 44 Effort Values (EVs) into Speed, your Skeledirge reaches a speed stat of 92 at level 50. This is just enough to outspeed uninvested base 70 Pokemon like Amoonguss. Being able to use Will O Wisp or Slack Off before an Amoonguss can put you to sleep with Spore is a game changer.
  • Physical Bulk: I usually put 252 points into HP and around 156 into Defense with a Bold nature. This allows me to survive a High Horsepower from a powerful Ground type or a Choice Banded hit.
  • Special Attack: Since Torch Song boosts your power naturally, you only need about 100 EVs here to ensure you can 2HKO common threats like Gholdengo after a single boost.

Hidden lore and the mystery of the 13 mosaic spots

One of the coolest things about Skeledirge is that its design is filled with deep historical references that I rarely see mentioned. If you look closely at its snout, you will count exactly 13 colored mosaic spots. This is not a random number. In Aztec mythology, the gods created the world from the body of a giant crocodilian monster named Cipactli. Its head was split into 13 pieces to create the 13 heavens, known as Topan.

The rest of the design is just as intentional:

  • The Drac de na Coca: The skeletal face is inspired by a mummified crocodile from the 17th century that is kept in a museum in Mallorca, Spain. Over time, its skin decayed to show the skull underneath, which is exactly how Skeledirge looks.
  • The Gaudi Connection: The colorful patterns on its head are a tribute to the Trencadis mosaic style used by Antoni Gaudi in Barcelona. It especially resembles the famous El Drac salamander statue.
  • The Soul Bird: The little fireball on its head is actually a separate spirit. The Pokedex tells us it was born when a soul inhabited the fireball, which is why the line becomes a Ghost type.

Whether you are trying to find the best team compositions for your journey or you just want to breeze through the early game, Skeledirge is a Pokemon that will never let you down. It is a masterclass in design that combines ancient history with some of the best mechanics in the series.
