What Are Purple Coins Used For in Sonic Frontiers?

The Purple Coins you see are actually Fishing Tokens. Names are interchangeable. They are used as a currency to pay Big the Cat in letting you borrow his fishing rod. Pay a small fee of a few Coins/Tokens and have a relaxing time by the water.

However, as you fish, you may notice that you earn a green type of currency with fish on it. You can use those green Tokens to buy various wares in Big’s shop. Such items range from Portal Gear, Egg Memos, Memory Tokens, Vault Keys, and so much more.

Fishing is the optimal way to level up Sonic’s stats and earn the required items needed to move the story forward. However, acquiring more Purple Coins may not be easy at first.

How to Get More Purple Coins

There are two ways you can earn these uncommon forms of currency in the game.

The first method is to simply roam around the island and find these. They’re in similar areas where you’d find lost Kocos but usually come in bunches of 3 to 5. It’s not the most reliable method, but you can still passively earn some as you’re doing everything else in the game.

The next method is to wait for the eventual nightfall event. After you’ve defeated a majority of the Guardians and lots of enemies in your current land, there’s an event that occurs at night where previously defeated enemies respawn. With them, these meteor-like beacons pop up on the ground.

Upon collecting many of these, you’re playing a limited-time roulette event that can earn you dozens of Purple Coins in a matter of minutes. The more of these colored beacons and fragments you pick up, the larger payout of these coins you get. Definitely watch out for when it happens so then you’re set to buy out Big’s inventory.

Sonic Frontiers is available now on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
