Research Methods is a Novice-tier skill in the Science Skill Tree in Starfield. This means that as soon as you create your character and level up for the very first time you can unlock this skill. This skill will reduce the required resources necessary to craft items and will eventually make sudden developments happen two times more than before. To rank up or level up this skill you will have to craft an increasing number of unique food, drinks, drugs, and weapon or equipment mods. Mastering the Research Methods will require you to craft a total of 30 different recipes.

Due to the condition of recipes being unique to count toward the rank-up tally – meaning that you cannot craft the same recipe multiple times – the best way you can approach this method is to craft the first recipes that appear in all crafting stations. You can even track the recipe so that when you visit a vendor, you will see the items you need with a magnifying glass next to it. Continue to research and craft these items and you will level up your skill in a decent amount of time. Be sure to level up your Scavenging skill so you might encounter more resources in your space adventures.
