‘Warm welcome’: Man travels to China and tries to negotiate a price for a bag. Then things got heated

The shopkeepers switched to Mandarin

Adea, who posts on TikTok as @adeacm22, shared a short clip from what the on-screen text called his first day in China. The video was filmed inside a bag shop and had drawn 15.1 million views, 1.6 million likes, and 6,555 comments at the time the figures were noted.

In the caption, he described the clip as “A warm welcome, if you ask me.” He wrote that he had gone in to buy a bag, that the woman quoted what he called an “insane a– price,” and that he said no thank you and tried to leave. He said she then told him to negotiate.

Adea wrote that he told her she would not like his price and tried to leave again, but that she insisted they talk. He said they went back and forth for 10 minutes, that he ended up not getting the bag, and that she then cussed him out in Mandarin while assuming he did not understand.

Shop footage and replies centered on the Mandarin exchange

The video opens in the bag shop with the on-screen text “First day in China.” A woman in a grey sleeveless top and grey pants stands in the shop, looking at the camera with a shocked expression while holding a black bag. The clip does not show the earlier price talk that Adea described in the caption.

@adeacm22

A warm welcome, if you ask me 😭 – Context: I went to buy a bag, woman said an insane ass price, I said no thank you and tried to leave then she told me to negotiate, I told her she won’t like my price and tried to leave again but she insisted that we talk. We went back and forth for 10 mins and I ended up not getting the bag, then she cussed me out in mandarin assuming I didn’t understand which I do, so I cussed her out back and her husband heard me but not her and that’s where we’re at. I’m not about to let someone disrespect me and my family and not do the same to them🤷🏿‍♂️ #ChinaTravel #Shanghai #funny #FYP

A man in a black T-shirt then enters the frame from the left, looking shocked and gesturing with his hands while speaking. He says, “You said it first. You said it first. You said it first.” He keeps speaking in an animated way, gesturing toward the camera and the woman, and bends down slightly before standing up again.

The camera pans quickly to the right, showing the inside of the shop with bags on shelves and racks, then pans back to the woman in the grey top and the man in the black T-shirt standing together. The woman points toward the camera while speaking.

The camera pans right again, past the shop and into a hallway outside, where a man in a blue T-shirt and white shorts stands smiling and looking at the camera. Price negotiations abroad can turn tense, as one man found when he tried the free bracelet scam on a tourist whose response left him stunned.

Adea wrote that he did understand the Mandarin and cussed her out in return. He said her husband heard him but did not hear her, and that this was the point the video had reached. He added, “I’m not about to let someone disrespect me and my family and not do the same to them.”

Under the post, some viewers focused on the language rather than the price. One commenter wrote, “Chinese people need to know that there are foreigners who knows mandarin.” Another wrote, “they are very racist.”

Other replies looked at the bargaining itself. One commenter wrote, “Honestly, they don’t get mad easily when they want to making money, unless you did something stupid.” A commenter who identified as Chinese wrote, “As a Chinese person I’m so sorry on their behalf that’s literally so rude and I promise a lot of us aren’t like that.”

Another viewer pushed back on people defending the seller and wrote, “those who defending the seller is crazy. yes they need to make money,everyone else does. but when you can’t negotiate,then you have the right to swear to your customers at first place?”
