“I begged her to stop drinking”: Mom gets 2 years in prison after forgetting her 3-year-old son in a scorching hot car

Tiffani Huff Holmes, a 42-year-old mother, was sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of her 3-year-old son, Myles Holmes. The sentencing took place following an investigation into the events of June 2025, in Bondurant, Iowa. District Judge Samantha Gronewald handed down the maximum sentence allowed for the charge, despite requests from the defense for probation.

As reported by True Crime News, the tragic incident began when Huff Holmes returned to her home on Hawthorn Drive with her three children. It was reportedly a scorching day with temperatures reaching 91 degrees. Evidence later determined that Huff Holmes had been drinking alcohol before driving home. 

Upon her arrival, she reportedly continued to consume alcohol and eventually fell asleep, completely forgetting to remove her son from the vehicle. The child remained inside the car while the external temperatures climbed, leading to his death from hyperthermia.

She reportedly lied to the authorities 

When Huff Holmes eventually woke up, she claimed to have found her son in a lawn chair inside the garage. She told authorities that the boy had blue lips and was hot to the touch. She reportedly waited between five and 10 minutes before placing a 911 call. 

During the initial investigation, she persisted in the claim that she discovered the child in the garage, but evidence contradicted this story. The child’s father pointed out that Myles Holmes could not have entered the garage on his own because the door was reportedly broken and required significant effort to lift. 

Investigators later discovered a near-empty bottle of vodka inside the residence, further complicating the timeline of events. Huff Holmes initially claimed she only drank the alcohol after finding her son, but the evidence presented by the Polk County Attorney’s Office painted a different picture.

During the sentencing, the child’s father, Marcus Holmes, addressed the court with a heartbreaking statement. He told the judge, “I begged her to stop drinking numerous times. Instead of stopping, she became better at hiding it.” He explained that Huff Holmes had struggled with alcohol for approximately five years and was not supposed to be drinking. 

As per Law & Crime, Assistant County Attorney Nan Horvat also spoke during the proceedings, noting that the mother had reportedly attended treatment programs at least three times prior to the incident. She stated, “Alcoholism is a terrible disease. On that summer day, you chose alcohol over Myles.”

Huff Holmes acknowledged her actions during the hearing. She reportedly stated that she had participated in inpatient and outpatient treatment programs and had been residing in a sober living facility for the past year. She also attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings as part of her recovery efforts. 

In her own words to the judge, she said, “I feel remorse, regret, and pure hatred toward myself.” She expressed a desire to keep the promises she made to her son and others to change her life.

The legal process for this case reportedly spanned several months. Huff Holmes was originally charged with child endangerment resulting in death, a felony. She surrendered to the Polk County Jail in December 2025. She later entered a guilty plea to the reduced charge of involuntary manslaughter, which is classified as an aggravated misdemeanor.
