Dissidia: Final Fantasy NT and PS4 Top Japanese Sales

Recommended Videos

After the busy period of Christmas sales, software and hardware sales have suffered a steep decline in Japan, as it is traditional. However, Sony’s PS4 is softening the blow with a string of relevant game releases, the first one being Dissidia: Final Fantasy NT, the 3 v 3 fighting game that pits iconic heroes and villains from the venerable RPG series. The game tops the charts with solid sales, although they are far from the heights of the first two entries on PSP years ago. You can play Dissidia right now for free thanks to the open beta that Square Enix will hold until January 21, with the character roster changing periodically. The game will be released in North America and Europe at the end of January.

The rest of the software list is taken by holdover games that have seen their numbers heavily drop after the holidays. Games like Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe have crumbled more than 70% in sales following the huge decline in sales of the Nintendo Switch compared to last week, as their sales are directly tied to the number of new customers getting the console.

The situation of the Switch is a mix of the stock issues that have resurfaced after Nintendo spent all resources in having as many units available at Christmas as possible, and also the general decline of sales in January. All in all, it is expected that retailers receive more units on January 20, coinciding with the release in Japan of Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle.
