Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have many new mechanics for players to enjoy. These mechanics include major additions like the new Terastal Phenomenon gimmick to simple features like cheering for Pokémon and changing the Rotom Phone’s case. Even so, fans will surely be interested in what features from previous games make a return, especially if they plan on giving themselves new challenges. One popular feature is the “Set” battle style, an option that disables prompts to switch Pokémon after knocking out an opponent’s. But will players be able to use the Set style in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?
Is the Set Battle Style Available in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?
Oddly enough, battle styles cannot be changed in Scarlet and Violet. This is especially notable since changing battle styles was something found in all previous mainline games — even the original Red and Blue titles! What this means is Scarlet and Violet will treat your normal playthrough as though you’ve kept the default Shift style on from the start. In other words, the game will inform you which Pokémon a rival trainer is sending into battle before giving you a free choice in switching one of your own out. This is only truly relevant for battles against trainers with more than one Pokémon, but those are also where the toughest challenges are…outside of Tera Raids, at least.
It’s currently unknown if this feature will make a return in a future update. It’s odd that the feature was removed in the first place, especially since Shift style was already the default in every game before this one. It’s a bit of the shame that the option is gone, but players will still be able to simply refuse the option to switch out whenever the question is brought up. It might get annoying for those who only ever played with Set mode, but for casual players that stuck with Shift, there won’t be much of a difference from how they’ve played up until today.
